Portland Castle

Dorset, UK

A commission by English Heritage to enhance the facilities for a Tudor castle built by Henry VIII on the shores of Portland Harbour. Our landscape proposal upgraded the public spaces of the castle and regenerated a newly acquired adjoining site to create an events and performance area for both summer and off-season use. The provision of additional car and coach parking on the adjacent Osprey Quay site forms part of the revitalisation of the former Royal Navy helicopter base and is strategically placed to form part of the facilities for the 2012 Olympic sailing venue.

The use of local Portland stone waste and locally collected seed and soil increases the biodiversity of the site which is in close proximity to Portland harbour and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
